Steep Point is the most westerly point of the Australian mainland. Vehicle access is by 4WD only. Soft roaders and low clearance 4WD may have difficulty in crossing soft and steep sand dunes. There are only a couple of steep and deep and soft sections with the most important task being to lower tyre pressure to less than 20 psi. High range is all you need. The corrugations are shocking for most of the last 40km from the
False Entrance junction. But it's worth every jolt!!
On the western side of the
Steep Point area are the Zuytdorp Cliffs (pronounced Zurtoff), which are up to 170 metres high. The Indian Ocean smashing against these cliffs provides sightseers with fantastic photography opportunities at almost every turn.
On the eastern side or
Shark Bay side are numerous sandy beaches, where one can see fish swimming in the shallows or
rock pools.
From a fishing point of view
Steep Point itself, is arguably the best
rock fishing platform in Australia, with the main catch being mackerel and snapper.
Although known to most as
Steep Point, the point itself is located at the western tip of the peninsula. The official name for the area is Edel Land .
The
Steep Point area is now managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation. You will need to complete a camping permit request form to book campsites before entering the area.
