Information

The Leanganook Camping Area in Mount Alexander State Park is a spacious campground in a natural bush setting. The mountain is sacred to the Dja Dja Wurrung People, who call it Liyanganyuk (Dog’s Teeth). You can learn more about its cultural significance from the signs at the Liyanganyuk Banyul gathering place and shelter.

Once the site of a koala park, the diverse animal, bird and plant life will delight nature-lovers. Below the canopy of Manna Gum, Messmate, Long-leaved and Yellow Box trees, wildflowers are plentiful in spring. Flushing toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces and shelter make it ideal for families and first-time campers. Sites are unpowered and camping is free with no bookings required.

Walkers can take a short detour from stop LT09 on the Goldfields Track to the camping area (stop LT10). From here, Dog Rocks is a pleasant 3km return walk (Grade 3, 45 mins, some steps), and Lang’s Lookout is 9km return (Grade 3, 2.5-3hrs, some steps, steep and rough sections).

Visitor Tips: the scenic Joseph Young Drive is sealed and suitable for all vehicles, however there are some steep sections and sharp corners. Drivers should take care, particularly in wet or icy conditions. The road into the camping area is unsealed. Vehicles, mountain bikes and horses are permitted on formed open roads but prohibited on walking tracks. No bins are provided, so please take your rubbish home for recycling or disposal.

Light fires only in the fireplaces provided. Collect only dead wood from the ground. Consider bringing your own firewood, or a gas camping stove or barbecue. No fires may be lit on a day of Total Fire Ban. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash.

An attractive, green site ridge top site well shaded and wind protected by white trunked Manna (Ribbony) Gum forest with an understory of scattered wattles and good grass cover over blue-gray granite.
The circuit road has a few small fenced parking areas, some with BBQ and/or bench.
Dispersed bush camping is encouraged on the grassed saddle beyond the day area.
Potentially cold in winter (ice and snow is not unusual).
