Description

This Trek Note provides a connecting route between Cooktown and the Bloomfield area via the tiny settlements of Rossville, Helenvale and the famous Lion's Den Hotel.

We have two trek notes that end at Ayton being the CREB Track, and the Bloomfield Track. This trek can be used to complete the journey through to Cooktown and perhaps the beginning of your Cape York adventure.

Environment

Near Ayton, is the important Aboriginal community of Wujal Wujal, meaning place of many waterfalls. Access to the Bloomfield Falls is managed through this community so check access conditions before you go.

This trek passes Cedar Bay National Park, a remote and beautiful region of great conservation importance. Its mountainous hinterland, almost entirely covered in dense tropical rainforest, is fringed by sandy beaches and coral reefs. The park is only accessible by boat or on foot, and is for experienced bush walkers only. Information is available from the Queensland Park & Wildlife Service, Regional Office Cairns (07) 4046 6600.

History

The small township of Ayton, north of the Bloomfield River, was the site of Queensland’s first sugar mill, and once had an active timber and tin-mining industry.
