This section of Mullaroo Creek has acquired the name "The Caravan" for good reasons. Well over 40 years ago before
Lindsay Island became part of the
Murray-Sunset National Park, this was a very remote part of Victoria that saw very few people venture and make the long trip into this area. Having purchased a second hand tent from some people that needed money urgently to get back to New Zealand, Geoff and Dot Dempsey from
Renmark set out for their favourite fishing spot on the "Mullaroo". Over time, they upgraded to on old Caravan, that was left permanently on site here. As this was a very good area to go fishing and their caravan was always on site, the locals changed the spot from the "Mullaroo" that all the local fisherman knew, to quite simply "The Caravan", and any instructions of going fishing were quite simple, we will meet you at "The Caravan". This area is now know and marks on the National Parks Maps with this very special name that only the locals knew the true meaning of.
The Area above Mullaroo Creek is very flat and timbered, making it the perfect place for a
camp, and being large enough to handle a very large crowd. It was not uncommon for the Dempsey's to have very large groups of friends and family out camping here, with number of over 40 people at one time not uncommon
