Vehicular access to the coast at Port Roper is not possible - the closest you'll get to the mouth of the river is about 8km away. Recreational fishing is allowed here at No. 1 and No. 2 Landings without a licence. This is a serious fishing location as you'll see from the scattered equipment and professionals lining the banks. There are no
services and this is very remote.
Roper Bar is another 50km from the Port Roper turn-off. The crossing was discovered in 1845 on Leichardt's expedition. The
rock bar separates the tidal salt from the fresh water. Beware of crocs here!
There are some nice spots to explore along the edge of the river near the crossing but signs indicate camping is not allowed on Aboriginal land so the caravan park is your only option here. If you try to fish from the river bank you might find the thick growth difficult to cast from.
