Information

Abundant supplies of brown coal led to the Vic govt siting several power stations on the coalfield as early as 1928. The plant seen today was built from 1974 to 1982 with coal taken on conveyor belts directly to the boilers saving costs. To produce 1480 MW of power takes 2400 tonnes of coal every hour. Only steam is emitted from the fat hyperbolic cooling towers. The thin chimneys of the boilers emit invisible CO2 and very little ash/smoke as this is precipitated out electrostatically. Since coal contains sulfur this burns to make sulfur dioxide gas which causes acid rain.
