"The graves of this cemetery belong to the early Afghan Settlers in the 1890s. Who provided transport between town and stations with camels and donkeys. It is believed the graves are so large because the lead camel was buried with his Master."The Afghan Cameleers played a significant role in the development and settlement of the Kimberley region and particularly in and around the Wyndham area. Once gold was discovered at Halls Creek and Wyndham was proclaimed a port, the Cameleers were required to move goods and supplies from the port to the Goldfields. They interacted well with Aboriginal people and many Aboriginal descendents of Wyndham owe their mixed heritage to this interaction. This Afghan Cemetery is physical evidence of the Afghan Cameleer and is of historic, scientific and social significance.
