Reginald Claude Sprigg (1st March 1919 - 2nd December 1994) was a pioneering South Australian geologist and adventurer who's enquiring mind and willingness to challenge the scientific viewpoint of the day led to many extraordinary discoveries.

Reg's geological interests extended under the sea and he built the diving chamber for the purpose of mapping areas of the ocean bed and exploring deep underwater canyons. He and his team of scuba divers completed the first benthic survey of the Gulf St Vincent.

A chance discovery of the diving chamber at Arkaroola led to a four year restoration project by a dedicated team of divers in an effort to restore and preserve its history.

Dr Richard Harris from the Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine unit, Royal Adelaide Hospital has headed the restoration project and initially approached Council in 2013 with the offer to gift the diving chamber to the City of Holdfast Bay for display.
