Gunbarrel

G'day,
Does anyone know what Parks view is in regards to travellers driving on the Lasseter hwy to the Great Central rd. I don't need a bucket load of stress arguing the point about paying for a pass to enter the Uluru area when I'll be turning right 4km away onto the Great Central rd with no intention of visiting the ROCK as I've been there twice before.
Cheers
Harry

Thanks sparra, that was too easy.
Are you familiar with other roads in the area namely Mulga park to Surveyor general's cnr?

Harry, unfortunately, that section of the GBH in the SA APY lands is closed to all visitors and transit people. You won't get a permit even at the best of times, but now will be double impossible with covid and following some problems. I had a permit years ago but was stopped by the police who wanted to see my permit.

The road from Giles down to the corner is in good condition. From memory it took about 2 hours from the Great Central Rd turnoff to the corner.

Ignore advice on some maps and forums that says you need to arrange to pay a fee and get an escort. I think that was years ago. I tried to find out more on that and no locals knew anything about it. Even on the phone number on the Hema Map at Wingelinna

Same response as Boobook (Tony). Did Surveyor Generals Corner in 2017, tried very hard to arrange for an escort and pay the fee. Phone number just kept ringing out. You still need a transit permit to be in the area, but forget the extra fee and the escort. Just be respectful to grave of the elder (Eddy) that is buried there.

By the way, in case you are unaware, there are actually two corner posts, as the corner is a “dogleg”. The first post has a small shelter near it, and the second post is about another 200 m further along the track just around a corner.

I believe the brass plate on the second post as been replaced since we were there in 2017.
