I’m looking at buying pre 74 40 series’ with a 1f, just wondering what conversions are out there to change it to a diesel? And if anyone has done it before? I’ve developed a bit of a list just making sure what I’m in for! Thanks!

The diesel drivetrain from a later model FJ45 or 47 should pretty much bolt in.
The best Toyota diesel to put in would be the 1HZ motor out of a 75, 80 or 100 series, they are all six cylinder and Toyota never put a four cylinder in a 45 or 47 in Oz.
Either of those engines would need a rebuild at this stage in life unless you are lucky enough to find one that has been already done.

I was thinking a H/2h/12 ht as I like them more but thank you for your suggestions!

What is your idea surrounding the drive trains?
Thank you!

I actually had this done. Fitted a B series engine to a 1976 FJ40 in about 1980. It was done by Kiewa Valley 4WD in Victoria. They changed engine mounts including a custom mount for the rear of the transfer case. Not sure of the rest. They were against fitting a 6 cyl due to weight and balance of the shorty. In all it was a good conversion. Bear in mind you have a classic or collectable vehicle and will probable seriously reduce its value by doing this.

But they came out with a 6 cylinder petol I had a 1975 petrol shorty no issues so what's the weight difference with a diesel. Also remembering people fitted a bullbar and a winch without weight and balance issues you speak of.

Have a look at installing install a 12HT engine if you can get your hands on one. They are a much better than the H or 2H and better power than a 1HZ and the H motor will rattle your teeth .The 1HZ will have the intake and exhaust manifold on the other side + radiator piping, starter motor and auxiliaries ie alternator vacuum pump and air cleaner, then an adaptor plate would have to be used to couple the bell housing.

Yeah I am looking at the earlier ones, I’ve found a few nice 12hts with a $6000ish price tag . Thanks for your help!

Have seen one with a Cat 3208 engine in it!

As well as the 12HT Eagle mentioned, the 1-HDT would be a good choice. Toyota reliability(once the big end issue was sorted), Turbo power & no electronics, like the later versions.

Have seen an F-100 with a small Cummins 6 in it. The Ford Barra motor is popular, but you're dealing with electronics then.

Hell Bob, with that truck engine you would have to stick a couple of 5" stacks on it. LOL

Good to see you are getting some rain, I see Lake Julius is 92% and rising and the Curry is flowing.

To fit a Cat 3208 V8, you would need to strengthen the chassis and front axle, and install custom-made springs and strengthen the spring perches.
Then there would be a major braking system upgrade needed to stop it.

A 3208 weighs at least 750kgs, that is a serious increase in weight of about 420kgs over any Toyota 6 cyl diesel, and 390kgs heavier than the Toyota 1VD-FTV diesel V8.

I don't understand how you could actually get a 45 Series Toyota registered with a Cat 3208 fitted.
I've seen an F-350 Ford with a 3208 fitted, it was a shoehorn fit, and it was very front heavy.

Cheers, Ron.

Ron to add to the list of mods, you would have to replace the drivetrain as well, from memory a low rated 3208 was about 800nm of torque.

I haven’t eyeballed the vehicle, so don’t know what mods have been done with the transplant.

Ron, you might be able to find the owner & find out the specs?

Some good rain around the west, about 120mm in Winton, and even higher falls south of town. Good start, albeit a slow one.

Hi Bob - Yes, that 45 series traytop with the Cat 3208 appears to be carrying a Boddington number plate, so it may be possible to track it down - although it could take a while.

I used to own a farm between Boddington and Wandering, and there were quite a few "revheads" in the area!

Cheers, Ron.

I'd contact Marks4wd adaptors, they seem to have conversion kits for everything.
A old friend put a 5 speed in his 40 series and that made a huge difference. It was diesel but I cannot remember if converted it to diesel or not. It was a long time ago and I think diff ratios may have to be changed as well if going from petrol to diesel (5 speed conversion may negate this?) He didn't use the company above but I'm sure they'd know the issues

"4cyl diesel factory turbo"

13BT 4 cyl?

Roothy's Milo has one so you'd find a few online articles to give hints as well. Being a light truck engine you'd have to gear it down to stop it revving on the highway. It would be a good match with a disk brake front end conversion.

Gday, keep in mind you will need to engineer most of the conversions, if your year model didnt come diesel. I cant remember when the 1h started being used. My sons mate put a 12ht in his fj45 and had to take it back out for this reason.
I have seen the dyna 14b motor used in the shorties, which were 3.7 litre direct injection and thesame to look at as a 3b, so theoretically, a drive train available from a wrecker would bolt straight up.

The 12HT is a great motor plenty of power and fitted with a 2 1/2' exhaust to let it breath they run well.

If your looking at a 4cylinder why not go a bit more modern and fit a Hilux motor instead of the old 13B something like the 1KD-FTV which has more torque and power.

Sorry i cant help with the diesel, but a wide range of engines have been fitted to these. I had a mid 70s, 40 series as a farm truck when i had acreage in the Southern Highlands NSW and it had a Ford 250 cu in six fitted and it was a power house. It was in great condition, i wish i had kept it. Regards, Michael
