Does anyone know what this mozzy is, its twice the size of the usual size ones I see, it has the gold parts on the body, only 1 leg left on it but no bands on the legs, only black i think,I can't see anything similar, thanks in advance.

Hello

Would be handy to know where you encountered this beast. I am assuming Australia, but its a big place.

Any clues?

Cheers

Ok - will ask my mozi expert mate (yes I have one - a mate and one who knows about mozis). There are however over 300 species so could be a challenge.

Cheers

Looks like the type we had in Vietnam. Kept us awake at night sitting on the end of the bed arguing whether to eat you there or take you down the creek.

Bob Y.
Stayed one night in the '60's at the old Hexham pub.
There was a fair bit of work going on at the slip so plenty of drinkers.

The pub was still going strong when most pubs would be shut, bloody hot Hunter river night and those bloody Hexham Greys all but carried us away.

The blood alcohol level of those mozzies would have been off the scale, they never gave in.
But we did, very early next morning.

If you are going to call it Sir, it is no threat as only the females suck blood.

So endeth the entomology lesson for today.

ABC did an article a good few years ago on what this maybe.

From memory, I think it was called an Asian Tiger or something similar.

You might be able to find it online

Looks a bit like the ones they get in Alaska, they trap them there and sell their fur. All jokes aside it is a fearsome looking beast.

Ok....I have been reliably informed that it is most likely Toxorhynchites speciosis......a very large species but fortunately not blood-feeding.

Larvae predate on larvae of other mosquito species.

See here for more pics and info.

A mozzie that feeds on other mozzies! I like it. There should be more of them!

Good work that.
