The leaves are strap-like, between 200 and 500 mm long, and tightly clustered around ground level. They emerge from a stem beneath the ground, a rhizome, that allows the plants to regenerate after fire. Flowers occur in spring and summer on branched stem to a metre or more. Black hairs occur along the flowers and stems
Family: Haemodoraceae Genus: Macropidia Species: fuliginosa Main Flower Colour: Other
CienneSat, 07 Feb 2015 11:12:00 GMTCatspaw - Anigozanthos humilis subsp. humilishttps://www.exploroz.com/wildflowers/823+catspaw-anigozanthos-humilis-subsp-humilishttps://www.exploroz.com/wildflowers/823+catspaw-anigozanthos-humilis-subsp-humilis Low growing in sandy/gravelly soil. It is a rhizotomous perennial with long, grey-green linear leaves up to 60 cm long. The leaves extend from a central point at ground level. Its fantastically shaped red and green flowers appear at the end of long stalks in Spring. These stalks can reach a height of over 1m from the base. The flowers open in sequence from the lowest point and spent flower-stalks may remain on the plant well after their colour has faded. Flowers are tubular and elongated, the tips of the 6 fused petals bending back when open to reveal the 6 stamens. Flowers contain nectar that is a food source for many birds, who in turn act as pollinators for the flowers. In November 1960, Anigozanthos manglesii was adopted as the floral emblem of Western Australia.
Family: Haemodoraceae Genus: Anigozanthos Species: manglesii Main Flower Colour: Red
Member - John and ValMon, 02 Feb 2015 14:57:00 GMTRed Buglehttps://www.exploroz.com/wildflowers/230+red-buglehttps://www.exploroz.com/wildflowers/230+red-bugle A tufted herb with wiry strap-like leaves about 30cm long. Although it is not a grass, it has a grass-like appearance, with strap-like, narrow, leathery leaves arising from the base of the plant. Flowering usually occurs between November and March, during the Top End wet season, however flowers have been observed as early as October and as late as May. The flowers are deep-red or orange red and occur in dense clusters on long stiff stalks, which also arise from the base of the plant. Fruit develop between November and March, and can linger until May. The fruit are red to black, fleshy capsules with three lobes. The mature fruit release a red-purple juice when crushed.
Family: Haemodoraceae Genus: Haemodorum Species: coccineum Main Flower Colour: Red
John BaasSun, 25 May 2014 09:25:00 GMT
