Information

Starkvale Creek Campground is accessible only by 4WD. Located in the Robinson Gorge area of Expedition National Park, between Taroom and Rolleston. The gorge winds 14km between sheer sandstone cliffs up to 100m high. It begins as a broad shallow basin in the north and narrows to a deep pool and narrow gorge towards its southern end. The campsite is 4km SE of the gorge lookout.

To get to Starkvale Creek Campground, you drive north from Taroom for 18km along the Leichhardt Highway and turn left at the Bauhinia Downs road. Turn left 2km further on towards Glenhaughton and Reedy Creek. Continue for 86km, to the turnoff to the park. Starkvale camping area is a further 23km and accessible only by four-wheel-drive.

The campground is in a forest setting and is not suitable for caravans or buses. High clearance offroad camper trailers or tents only. Facilities include rain water tank (not reliable, so BYO water), and pit toilets.

From Starkvale, there is a track that leads to a lookout over Robinson Gorge - distance 4km SE. To get there, you turn off the same track to reach the only access into the gorge along a steep and rough trail for approximately 20 minutes. In the gorge itself, there are no trails. Only experienced walkers should hike along the gorge to the 'Cattle Dip'.

Essentials to bring: At least 7 litres of water per person per day (for drinking, cooking and washing), insect repellent, gas stove and fuel, and sealable containers for rubbish. Read more about Things to know before you go.

Bookings: can be made up to 3 months ahead from the Qld parks website. See link above.
Or, at the QPWS Taroom office, QPWS Roma office or at the self-registration shelter at the campground. Under the self-registration system, you write out your own permit and insert your camp fees (cash, cheque or credit card details) in the box provided.
