The concrete gravity Guthega Dam impounds 1830 megalitres in the pondage. This water supplies Guthega power station via a tunnel and pressure pipeline.
Completed by a Norwegian company in 1955 the dam is the first of three on the upper Snowy River and was the first of 16 in the Snowy Scheme. Snowbound in winter and freezes over bringing a halt to generation as there is no liquid water.
Will spill in spring when snowmelt combines with heavy rain to have runoff exceed 28 cumecs which is the capacity of the two turbines at the power station. Spills in Oct 2019 and Sept 2021.
