Information

Currawinya National Park is part of the mulga lands bioregion. Most of the park lies within the Paroo Floodplain and includes two large bodies of water - Lake Numalla, freshwater, and Lake Wyara, a salt lake.

Gazetted as a National Park in 1992, it was previously pastoral land. In 1991, the Government of Queensland purchased two properties, Currawinya and Caiwarro Homestead. Relics of the pastoral occupation since the 1860s are scattered throughout the park. The park also contains many sites of cultural significance, which indicate a long period of Aboriginal occupation and use of the wetlands within the park.

An ambitious project to re-introduce the bilby is being conducted within the park, with a 25 square km bilby enclosure surrounded by a predator proof fence. The enclosure was opened in 2001.

Visitors can bush camp at a number of sites within the park. Sites are located at Ourimperee Waterhole behind the Woolshed or at several sites on the Paroo River near Caiwarro; namely Caiwaroo Waterhole bush camping area, Corni Paroo Waterhole bush camping area & Pump Hole bush camping area. Camping permits are required and fees apply. See website for latest fees. A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your camp site.

Fishing, canoeing and swimming are popular recreational activities in the park and of course birdwatching.
