Green Head is a small coastal Mid-west town with a
population of around 250 . Unlike most similar small coastal towns it is not driven so much by
the rock lobster industry but by its
population servicing the region's mines and activities as technicians and trades Workers.
The first to visit the
Green Head coast were Dutch sailors sailing to the Spice Islands for trade. Several Dutch ships were wrecked on the adjacent Western Australian reefs, among them the 'Gilt Dragon'. Abraham
Leeman and crew from the 'Waeckende Boey', searching for survivors of the gilt Dragon, were marooned on Fishermans Island just south of
Green Head in 1658. The town of
Leeman is 15 KM to the north of
Green Head.
The town was named after the adjacent headland and was formally gazetted in the 1960’s; as such a number of ‘asbestos/fibro’ style homes still dominate the back streets although new building indicates recent prosperity. Greenhead has some accommodation options.
Fishing and boating are popular and the strong summer southerlies are conducive to kite surfing and similar. A local feature is Dynamite Bay which is a stunning, small, almost enclosed bay which is sheltered from winds from almost all directions by a rocky
cliff circling the beach.
