Turtle Bay is located at the northern end of Dirk Hartog Island and is located between
Cape Inscription and
Cape Levillain. These waters are historically significant being the location of the first recorded European landing on Australian soil by Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog and later by William
Dampier and others. Many ships have been wrecked along these shores due to lack of marine charts. In 1910 a lighthouse was built at
Cape Inscription and is still in use today.
For 4WD travellers, a
campsite is located on the cliffs looking over
Turtle Bay - see separate listing (
Turtle Bay Camp).
