Information

The seaside resort of Torquay is located at the north-eastern end of what Victorians know as The Surf Coast. Torquay's ocean beach faces into Bass Strait, so is a genuine surf beach with excellent surfing waves in the right conditions.

Torquay is just 21 km south of Geelong and is the gateway to the Great Ocean Road. The town has a population of about 13,000 but that number increases substantially during the Summer holiday season and at long weekends.

From the 1860s, after British settlement of the area, picnickers began to frequent the location. Originally known as Spring Creek, it was later known as Puebla and became Torquay in 1892.

Torquay is a thriving commercial centre with caravan parks and a wide variety of hotels, motels and other privately provided accommodation options. As the north-eastern gateway to the Great Ocean Road it is a convenient stocking point for the trip with a shopping area featuring some of the big names of retail.

Appropriately, Torquay is the home of the Surf World Surfing Museum and many outlets for surfing needs. Although primarily a beach town, it provides access to an extensive hinterland of farm country, small towns and mountainous areas providing many walking, hiking and driving opportunities. And, of course, the surf beaches in the area are suitable for fishing.
