George Town is located on the east bank of the Tarmar River in Northern Tasmania just a few kilometres from the mouth of the river at Low Head. Named for King George III, the town was established in the early 1820s, the post office opening in 1822. The council area has a population of a bit under 7,000. It is the largest town near to the Bell Bay shipping terminal and provides much of that port's workforce.

The town has many historic buildings and contains a range of commercial enterprises that support the local industries including a number of vineyards. It is also home to Peppers York Cove Resort which takes its name from the small tidal inlet from the Tamar, on the southern shore of which it is located. The original buildings in George Town are located on the northern shore of York Cove and the eastern bank of the Tamar River.
