Latrobe is located in northern Tasmania, near
Devonport. It is situated on the
Mersey River. In the early days of Tasmania, before the building of dams in the headwaters of the river cargo ships reached its port. Australia on the
Mersey River. It is 8 km south-east of
Devonport on the Bass Highway. It is the
seat of government for the Latrobe Shire Council.
First settlement was in 1826 with the town named in 1861.
Population in increasing with the 2016 census showing 4169 residents as the town acts as a dormitory suburb for Davenport. But the area remains rural in character.
Farm lands run up to the edge of the residential areas that to a minor extent is overtaking it. Dairy farming, market gardens and horticulture are the main pursuits. The town has the normal facilities of an agricultural support centre.
Tourist facilities include a range of accommodation and refreshment houses. It has an excellent visitor information centre. It also hosts the Australian Axemens Hall of Fame that, among other things, commemorates Latrobe as the birth place of Wood Chopping as a sport.
