Captain Matthew Flinders, in 1802, was the first European to explore the area around Port Augusta. Forty years later pastoral leases extended from the Flinders Ranges north to Leigh Creek. It was the prosperous wool merchant and MP, Thomas Elder, who initiated the mid-1850s move to survey the harbour and layout the township of Port Augusta.

To visit the Matthew Flinders Lookout and take in the scenery from the cliffs, drive through the gates of the Arid Lands Botanical Garden off the Stuart Highway which are open from 7.30am to sunset. Then take the marked turnoff to the Matthew Flinders Lookout. There is ample car parking for both cars and caravans at the carpark before taking the short walk to the Lookout. There are no facilities available at the site.

While in the area, a visit to the Arid Lands Botanical Garden is worth while which houses a visitor centre, cafe and plant sales. There is also a bird hide and walking tracks.
