Information

The Tarkine (officially takayna), region within the north west of Tasmania contains the Savage River National Park and surrounding reserves which protect the largest area of cool temperate rainforest in the nation and the 2nd largest in the world. The Tarkine is home to more than 60 species of rare, threatened and endangered species. The Tarkine region roughly stretches from the west coast, the Arthur River to the north, the Pieman River to the south and the Murchison Highway to the east. There is no official or formal way to experience the Tarkine so you can explore as much or as little as you like when in this region but there is a sealed road called the Tarkine Drive that will give you a good taste of what the region offers. The Tarkine Drive is a loop road trip that starts and ends in Smithton and is 205km long. With so much to see along the way many people will take a few days. Just keep in mind that while the main route is completely sealed, there are certain segments to some of the highlights that are unsealed. However, these are all fairly well maintained and manageable by any regular vehicle. Refer to the Discover Tarkine website (link provided in this listing) for more information including a self drive brochure and interactive map.All the towns, points of interest and camping options within the Tarkine region are featured in ExplorOz Places and on the EOTopo map including: Marraway, West Point State Reserve, Bluff Hill Point, Arthur River, Edge of the World, Sundown Point State Reserve, Nelson Bay, Couta Rocks, Rebecca Lagoon, Balfour Track, Julius River, Sumac Lookout, Lake Chisholm Dempster Plains, Rapid River, Milkshake Hills, Tayatea Bridge, Trowutta and more.
