Crocodile
camping area is around 2km long, and has a shady beach-front vegetation and is bounded by tidal creek. The
camping area can be reached by high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle only—it is not accessible for trailers, caravans, campervans or buses. Access involves four-wheel driving in sand. Do not drive on the salt flats behind the beach or attempt to cross the tidal creek at the southern end of the
camping area.
The southern end of Crocodile
camping area is extremely close to an estuarine river system. Large crocodiles are frequently seen here—always be croc wise in croc country.
The access track meets the beach 39km from Wakooka outstation (35km from the park boundary).
There are no facilities and pets are not allowed. Fires are allowed (except when fire bans apply). Fuel stoves are recommended. Do not collect firewood in the park.
Adequate food and drinking water, rubbish bags, insect repellent, mosquito nets, fuel stove and adequate fuel, spare parts for your vehicle and recovery equipment are essential.
Book online. Phone service is not available. Satellite phones are essential and personal locator beacons (PLBs) are highly recommended.
Cape Melville National Park (CYPAL), including all camping areas, is closed throughout the wet season every year from 1 December to 31 July (inclusive). These dates may vary depending on weather and road conditions, and camping areas and roads may also be closed after heavy rain.
Generators that operate at a noise level less than 65dB(A) when measured at a distance of 7m from the generator are permitted at all camping areas in
Cape Melville National Park (CYPAL).
