72 m high rockfill dam, third and final one on the Snowy river, with Guthega first then Island Bend. Water level held near 80% giving the same volume as Sydney Harbour - 550 GL. Constructed Dec 1965 to April 1967 then upgraded with auxilliary spillway and micro power station completed by 2011. Each year some 100 to 300 GL of water is pumped out of the lake and into the Snowy-Geehi tunnel. This feeds Murray 1 and Murray 2 Power Stations and eventually is stored in Hume Reservoir for irrigation - one purpose of the Snowy Scheme, the other being power generation.
Since 2002 more water has been released into the Snowy downstream of the dam for environmental purposes. In the water year ending April 2022 210 GL is to be released. Link to releases: https://www.snowyhydro.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/JindWebDraft-2023-24.pdf
Access to the main NSW snowfields is via Kosciuszko Rd across the top of the dam.
