Morphett's Enginehouse was built in 1858 by Cornish Stonemasons, Thomas Paynter and Ambrose Harris for housing an 80" diameter Cornish atmospheric engine. The imported engine from Cornwall was transported from Adelaide to Burra on a purpose built jinker. It commenced pumping in 1860 and ceased in 1877 and in 1916 the disused beam engine was removed for scrap. In 1925 when youths were smoking out rabbits from the disused building, the fire got out of hand and destroyed the enginehouse and shaft timbers.

In 1986 as part of the South Australian Jubilee 150 project, the enginehouse and was reconstructed and the shaft retimbered. Alongside of the Morphett's Enginehouse are the ruins of the Morphett's Winding House that was erected in 1861.
