275/70 r17 or 265/70 r17?

I'm running 285/70 r17 on the Ranger now, but want to go down a size. I had considered 275/70 R17 (approx 32") but not sure about availability ion more remote areas. I'd rather not go to the 265/70, but will if it is a better choice for replacements.

Any ideas? Any experience with either (or an alternative option)?

275's are very hard to get outside of the bigger cities. 285's and 265's are way more common and available.

I've been running 285's for nearly 300,000 k's on my Ranger and apart from a little bit of extra fuel use I love them !

What is your reason or wanting to go down in size ?

Thought so. I'm looking to get a little better performance (fuel wise and towing). I know it won't be massive, but I feel the 285's have been a bit of overkill...

Might be 265's then...

Tiresize.com also has weights for many different tyres Mark, which was really the reason I posted.
Can be quite a decent diff between 265 and 285 depending on tyre type and brand.
Not as big a jump as PT to LT from what I've seen though .

Hi Mark,

Going back to 265 will effect your Speedo reading, it will read higher than actual. If these were the original OEM size on the vehicle, then you should have a problem.
