Does anyone know of a company that will insure a van that has hail damage? I have tried a lot of companies to no avail.....It is not a write off and is currently registered in NSW.

I could in SA, but not NSW. Ring a couple.
Just maybe the van is not insurable in its current condition.
What is the story? Did you buy it like that?

Does your insurance company on insure things from South Australia? That doesn’t sound right?

That is what they specialise in and that is what they are good at. Besides it is better to deal with someone local.

ps, a BROKER does not insure anything, he works FOR the customer to find the best insurer for the job.
How about some more information as to why you are in this situation.
Cheers,
Peter

I bought it with some hail damage stupidity thinking wouldn’t be this much of an issue.

I guess the price would reflect that.
You could get it fixed or carry your own insurance risk.

I'm not into insurance in any way, hate it actually and rarely have it but surely you could have the hail damage excluded from the contract or terms and conditions or whatever they call it so you can have everything else covered in the event of accident or theft or whatever - just not hail damage repairs ?

Something a good broker should be able to do !

Just a thought

There is no up side for an insurer taking on a damaged car / house / caravan etc. If the damage was very minor you might fluke an insurer who will consider it with an independent report attesting to its condition including photos. In reality though insurers only want to insure things that sit inside the nine dots. The main reason they don't want it is that if you make a claim in the future the pre existing damage compromises the repair - particularly if the next claim is the result of another hail storm.
I would normally be an advocate for the suggestion of getting a broker involved but unless you have an existing relationship you will struggle to get one interested in something like this.
Your best bet is to approach the insurer who you have other business with (the more the better) and offer to get a report, carry a higher excess, and accept an exclusion for all pre existing damage. If/when they say no, ask for it to be escalated. Beyond that I can't offer much more.
Good luck.

Trevcw, I am a little perplexed by your follow up. I wasn't attempting to be the "be all end all". Up until a few years ago I was part of the machine that made the decisions that you are now frustrated by. Sitting on the other side of the fence now I am happy to assist people who get caught up in the "one size fits al" mentality that insurers have in respect of personal insurances ie homes, cars, caravans etc. What I was trying to say is that as a customer - presumably you already hold some insurance covers - you have a bit of leverage. You also have rights under the complaints handling processes to escalate things if the person you are dealing with isn't prepared to assist with a solution.
Nevertheless if you have things sorted I will withdraw to my cave whence I came and leave you to it.

Hey Trev
What about some more thought about repairs?
A decent fibreglass repairer would be able to make it look like new ….. and then look at insurance.

Cheers

Whilst good in theory Jim, it won’t change the fact that it has been hail damaged. If it has been written off as a “repairable write off”, that will be documented somewhere.

We weren't able to find anywhere that it was a write off or a repairable write off. In Fact I had no problems registering it.

I have thought about playing that card, but if I was to have another type of accident, it would be obvious to the assessor..... bit risky.
And also today i spent a while in the service nsw office getting them to do a thorough investigation to make sure it was never any type of a write off.

got a bit hail damaged and you did not think it was worth claiming ??
I had the same a long time ago ,Purchased at auction in Vic returned to SA and got it registered
Motor vehicle inspection looked it up told me there was no write off order of any kind and
I registered it and insured , there was not a lot of dents , and I just enjoyed it ,

Every new insurance proposal will ask the question "Is there any existing damage".
What did you tell them?

I guess a pertinent question , Trev, is ............ would YOU insure an already damaged vehicle ?
I don't think you'll find someone, but if you do, good luck to you.

Still think you should get a quote for repairs.

Cheers

I had a caravan that was hail damage, very slight to me and only noticeable when the sun was on it.The quote to fix it was $25,000 and the insurance company wrote it off, could not find anyone to insure it if I brought it ,had to be fixed first.

Bazooka, there is little point to insuring a trailer or caravan against Third Party Property Damage (TPPD). The liability sits with the towing vehicle. I've not heard of an insurer offering Third Party Fire and Theft (TPF&T) on towed vehicles. If it was available the premium would probably be little different to full comprehensive cover.

Thanks Kennell. I hadn't thought it through (obviously) but it does seem odd to me that you couldn't insure your caravan or trailer for 3PP F&T.

Just looked and (youi link) seems to offer it. Possibly saw a gap in the market.

Our Jayco Penguin was insured with NRMA and got hail damaged about 9 years ago. It was declared a repairable write-off. I wanted to retain the Penguin so made an offer which the NRMA accepted and gave us the insured amount less excess, less offer. They wouldn't insure it again, so I went with APIA who were happy to insure a hail-damaged van as long as this was noted as an exclusion. I subsequently sold the van to a friend who still has it insured, but I'm not sure who with.
