Quite an advance on the original phone box out at the crossroads isn’t it.
Safe travel,

Optus has got the jump on Telstra at many outback communities. Telstra didn't serve them so Optus jumped in (or got the government contract - who knows?).

Its not unusual to get only Optus out in the Never Never, Marree to Marla on the Oodnadatta Track is only Optus. We have Telstra and Optus Mobile phones to get whatever is in the area, if at all. Michael

Telstra seems to follow when Optus gets the jump on them. Marree 2019 Optus only, now both. I think William Ck had Telstra techs there at the time. Oodnadatta Optus, Marla was Telstra, Kulgera Optus, whoever got the Mobile Blackspot remediation contract was the first kid on the block.

Hi Warren, we were last there in late 2018 on the way to Darwin so a lot can happen in a few years. We stayed overnight at William Creek and it was just Optus. Nice to see a bit of competition and i don't think Telstra likes to be outdone. I guess the network is slowly growing which is good for everyone. Hopefully we will have Elon Musk Sky Link soon and coverage will be greatly improved. Michael

Yes as do we Michael but this is a first for the Canning. The Optus service has only just come on in the last couple of months here. And extends to the Well site 3km from the community which seems good.

Hi Michelle, My post was really in reply to Frank's post above, my apologies if you thought that i was replying to your initial post. But that's great to have a least that small section when travelling through there. Hows your trip? Is the Canning busy? The weather and road conditions Good? Michael

Hi Michael, the CSR is dead quiet...there are NO vehicles going past well 33 AT ALL for the past 2 DAYS. Also saw no one but drill operators along the Kidson.

We have now been invited onto the community as the Martu Rangers and data manager wish to talk to us. Spent last night with the school teacher and the community coordinator. The store manager told us that no vehicles are coming through north/south (or vice versa) only east/west (or vice versa).

The weather is clear and sunny no wind but very cold overnight.

We have worked all day today from the bush camp here attending to Help Desk and built an app update to 7.3.5 which we are releasing to all stores overnight. Can't complain!

Hi Michelle, sounds fantastic, not a bad spot to be working I'd say. Thanks for the reply and enjoy the rest of trip and stay safe. Michael

What a stupid situation to have two discreet carriers of our telephone system. I don't recall how and when this came about but it was a foolish decision. I believe that all essential services, which includes our communication systems, should always remain in the direct control of our government.
It is bad enough that we have State Governments with disparate legislations, but consider if we had the ridiculous situation of shire police departments as they do in the USA.
I despair!
Cheers

Mobile phone infrastructure should have been publicly owned as an essential service. That said, I do remember a time in the mid to late 60's when it took three years for my sister to get a telephone connection, because the PMG cable stopped two houses away. The house was about 3.5 km from the Cairns CBD, at the time the city had a population of about 28,000. About that time, there was a Four Corners expose of the inefficiencies in providing telecommunications services, so really Joe public finds it hard to win no matter what the arrangements.

Everything has been flogged off over the last 20 year, federally and state owned. But don't worry Warren, you will be the winner, more competition and lower prices. How many time have we heard that but never happened.. Michael

Well stated, Allan!
If we are to have multiple carriers then once outside major towns and cities the system should be carrier agnostic! Australia is a very large country and to have two carriers sevicing areas of very low population density is just madness not to mention extremely wasteful of expensive resources.

Thanks Robert,
"Carrier agnostic". Now that's a term I will use.

G'day David & Michelle,
I purchased the Traveller app & Hi res maps a month back for our 3 month trip to WA.
I have to say the package is fantastic. Seen many more interesting places by seeking out POI from the maps & found some lovely remote camp spots.
Everything just works great offline & if I need to do something the software is easy to navigate & makes sense.
Of course on the rare occasion one needs to consult the USER MANUAL it seems very well laid out. :-)
After a few frustrating years of using the competition product I certainly won't go back to it.
Looks like a few friends might be convinced to purchase Traveller as well. Oh & it loaded onto my Google Pixel 6 Android without a hitch.
Enjoy your trip as will we.
Cheers
Stu.
