G'day,

I watched a YouTube video of Malcolm Douglas driving the CSR from south to north in 1986. He drove his blue Land Rover Defender/County and stopped near Well 23 for a fuel dump. The video mentions that Malcolm's Land Rover was setup with extra tanks to carry 600 litres of diesel. Is this hyperbole? Or were the old Land Rovers really that bad on fuel?

I'm assuming the fuel at the Well 33 community didn't exist in 1986, the video doesn't mention it. The largest long range setups I've seen on Toyotas are 90L+180L twin tanks. Malcolm could supposedly carry 600 litres yet he still used a fuel dump? Was 600L excessive overloading or simply a safety margin in those days?

If you'd like to watch, fast forward to 14 minutes in this video: https://youtu.be/Z-mXGF-Hcyg?t=840

Cheers.

Wow. In flying, there's always a sweet spot for when you start burning fuel because you're carrying too much fuel... with 600L on board I'd expect at least (guess) 200L was pointless as it would have been used to carry all the fuel in the first place! Thanks for the link!

I've read about a number of people taking approximately 400 litres of diesel on the CSR. I suppose fuel requirements are also dictated by side tracks visited along the way. There's plenty of good Malcolm Douglas videos for free on YouTube, enjoy!

Thanks Ben
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole video, especially the laid back commentary.

Cheers

G'day Jim. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! There's plenty more Malcolm videos on YouTube. I like to watch Malcolm (or Jack Absalom) when it's too wet to go camping, like it has been here in SE-QLD for the past few weeks. Often I learn things from these videos and appreciate the old school, simpler ways. Cheers Mate.

I’d suggest he has 2 44’s strapped down in the back, a hand of bananas to eat, and a pair of jocks as just incase.;) for me to do 2000 kms I’d need 400 litres, so 1 44 would suffice
b4 you bag me out, walk a mile in my shoes, then your a mile away and have my shoes :)
