Hi All

Has anyone seen a product whereby you can wire up Usb C sockets with a high output (up to 100w).

This would involve an electronic brick of some fashion wired behind the dash. Then, Usb outlets built into the dash (replace a spare plate like you would for a headlight switch or similar).

I thought something like this would be out now, with bigger tablets, and even some folks using laptops in the front of the car for navigation. I got a blank stare at the local Ashdown-Ingrams. Except for one young lad that said I need a portable battery box like you do to run a fridge.......................................... :-)

Hoping to get away from the "Povo" idea of using the cigarette lighter.

Ideas anyone?

Thanks

Lyndon

The cigarette lighter option works perfectly for us.
These can deliver 19V all day powering and charging our notebooks and 9V running the 10" Samsung tablet up front as our navigator.

Both purchased from Aliexpress.

I have 2 of these awaiting delivery for the car.

and 2 of these that now power the usual and have replaced the USB A only units.

100 watts would over load most ciggy sockets and do their thermal link.
Better off with the unit that replaces the socket and running heavier wiring from your accessory battery.

I have nothing that draws 100W.
Notebook (s) suck 65W running and charging the battery @ 19VDC.
Samsung tablet a whopping 30W @ 9V and c12W max. once fully charged.
Truck 20Ah jump starter - power bank 40W @ 15V.
Plus all the 5V bits.
The big stuff is never charged together on the same adapter. I have a few conveniently placed.

The linked adapters barely reach luke warm in operation. I'm happy.
The PD auto voltage change from 5-9-12-15-20V sold me.

I went for some twin USB sockets, 2.4A output, Lyndon. Ordered them from China about a week or two before Covid started, back in 2020. Thought that’s the end of that, lost my dough!

3 months later they turned up, posted from an address in Sydney? WTF? Wasn’t sure that I should even open them.

The 2.4A output really kick the iPads along, especially when mapping & logging your journey.

You can buy the twin usb sockets to install and hard wire in pretty much anywhere these days, Supercheap, Repco, BCF they all usually have them as well as online(usually cheaper).
They usually have a high 2.1 or 2.4 and a 1.x for the other one depending on the brand.
Most of the big autoelectric mobs make them like Narva, Hella etc.
You really should wire them up with thicker wire direct to the battery to get the best performance as most car fag sockets are very lightly wired.
Fag sockets are designed to be used for just that a fag lighter which is on for no more than 30 seconds not for constant loads and high loads like laptops etc. They will eventually go high resistance and quite often melt under high loads. The centre positive pin makes a very poor contact at best and will constantly move when driving especially on rough roads.
Replace them with merit type plugs which are designed for the job and have a positive lock/clip in when inserted to ensure the connection stays made.

Found THIS

Don't think my cig lighter will like it much though. I've melted the positive cable off the back of one once before..., running a 3 way fridge for a LONG time on 12v whilst driving

Whoops, another "quality" product, most likely made by our Chinese friends..... MELTS. See Amazon reviews, click on 1 or 2 stars. BAD news, should be taken off the market!!

Now THIS is interesting. Pity it doesn't work the other way, as it seems it might be what I'm after.

If I remember correctly I bought this from Autobarn, cost about $35.
Will charge my iPad, iPhone and my tyre pressure monitor. Can’t remember the max amps, sorry. At least 2.1A plus 2x1A all at the same time.
