For the more adventurous driver, this is an alternative route to Maralinga Village. Maralinga was one of Australia's most secretive places for decades, being the site for the British Atomic testing.

This route option to Maralinga Village from the Eyre Highway is for the more adventurous driver. It is an alternative to the main route via Colona & Ooldea.

Rocket Rod

We are thinking of doing this tour later this year and I'm planning our route. We'll go north up the Ooldea Rd but would like to return via Watson on the Trans line and then south down to the Eyre hwy. ExplorOZ calls this the Maralinga via Nullabor Roadhouse Rd. Does anyone know the condition of this track and/or requirements for permits. I've emailed Maralinga to seek their help too.

Just got a reply from Maralinga Tours saying the road is doable. That's good enough for me!

From Maralinga Village, it’s bitumen all the way down to Watson.

From there south it’s a single, slow track but easy, with sections of limestone on the track.

When you eventually reach the Old Eyre Highway, turn right and it’s only a short drive to the Nullarbor Roadhouse.
