Tablet 10" with GPS for Exploroz Traveller

Hi All
Having done a little research I'm only getting more confused over what is needed to run the Exploroz Traveller when offline.
We have an Ipad Mini & understand this won't work with out an external GPS receiver.
We have decided to just get a new unit dedicated to navigation needs but am struggling to find one with the GPS requirements for offline operation.
We are looking at the Lenovo LEN0186AU but I can't see where it says it has a GPS that doesn't rely on a mobile network to operate. Sales people aren't much help either.
Or possibly what (budget) units would you guys suggest?
Sorry for the questions if they have been asked before but this is not one of my areas of expertise. lol.
Thanks in advance
Paul & Michelle

Virtually all Android tablets and phones retailing in Australia and here in NZ have an inbuilt GPS receiver that does not require WiFi or cellular connection.
The Lenovo will have a GPS receiver.

Thanks for the fast response,
I was concerned it would be relying on the mobile towers to get location.
As I said the sales people will tell you anything.

Check the reviews for that tablet. There may be better options for a similar price.

Our tablet:

Both of those have only 3GB RAM, which will not be enough for Traveller and vector maps. They may work in a fashion, but the "user experience" will be poor, with slow response times to scrolling and zooming the maps.

I retired my 3GB tablet for that reason.

Your experience is vastly different to mine.

I have a Samsung Tab A 10.1 2020 and the earlier 10.5 2018 models both with 3GB.

ExplorOz Traveller, OziE and about 30 other GPS navigation apps all run perfectly without any issues.
My 6GB RAM phone that costs twice as much performs no better with those apps.
Even my old $50 5" Vodafone Smart N8 quad-core 1.3 GHz phone with 1.5GB & 16GB handles it all with ease.

Most mapping apps are not demanding on RAM or CPU at all.

My experience is certainly different. I have a Samsung Tab A 2017 with 2gb RAM and it's unusable with the Traveller and the vector maps. My phone with 4GB is just ok. My Tab S2 with 3GB is no good. My Tab S6 with 6GB flies.

Are you using the 2021 vector maps or the 2019 raster maps?

Yes, that could well be a factor, along with whether you're using the vector maps or the raster maps.

Paul, not sure why you have the idea an IPad will not work with an external GPS receiver.

Bad Elf units work perfectly and are designed for Apple, will will also work on Windows and Android .

Connector via Bluetooth and you can run up to 5 individual units at once.

Hi Stephen
Sorry, my wording is confusing. I meant it won't work without a GPS receiver ....
Either way we don't want to use the Ipad. I was hoping to have a dedicated unit for mapping.
The lenovo is affordable as long as it has the GPS receiver installed, which it looks like it does.
Just looking at other options
Thanks

Hello

Ipads with option for SIM card have inbuilt GPS - its just the wifi only models that don't have the GPS inbuilt. Get one of those (if you head down ipad path) and you wont have to bother with external GPS.

Yes they do, and also come with a hefty price tag. I'm really trying to keep cost to a minimum that's why I'm looking at the android tablets ATM.
But all this info is making it clearer.....
Thanks for you input

Hi - I purchased my current IPad mini (as a screen for flying the drone) on eBay as a refurbished unit - cheaper than new - it was a while ago so no longer relevant but worth investigating as an option maybe. I actually prefer Android devices but the iPad slots into the DJI drone controller perfectly and is sweet.

Typing in lenovo leno186au, doesn't find it when I search. Is there any more info to identify it. ie site etc, The Lenovo site has M10 which has GPS(USA) and GLONASS( Russian system) receiver, Varied reports about the M10 though. Is there lowest limit of memory the Mapping will work with? I don't know. The M10 has 2GB wired/soldered to board and 32GB MMC,
Recent upgrade of site offerings say lesser model with lower Android operating system may not work or give trouble. I have a cheap Lenovo Tab 8 bit Android 7, it has only 1gb so probably not good for latest mapping. Cheap may not be the best for speed of operation or perhaps running two mapping systems at same time.

I would only be running the one mapping (Exploroz Traveller)
Here's a link to the Lenovo https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-tab-m10-hd-2nd-gen-10-1-4gb-ram-64gb-emmc-tablet-len0186au
Looks like it has 4gb Ram & 64GB drive & it is the M10
Do you think this is OK ?
Thanks,

I see the LENO 186 is LEN 0186, I probably misread that bit but it is an M10. The M10 has the GPS and GLONASS but neither is mentioned in the specs on Officeworks site, Best to check that is does or show is over. The 4GB and the 64GB should be enough, I will miss out on the internet features as Frank mentioned in post below, and I won't have a 4g enable device as just one sim plan is enough for me. It is the ability to have mapping away from towers which is important to me. I agree a Samsung is probably better though if $$$$ permit. My cheap Lenovo is nothing flash in startup or performance. A bit like a narrow cut lawnmower, gets the job done but takes longer.
Are you able to visit an Officeworks to look and see the book specs of the M10 they sell? If they have one on display you can look in tools and find location services to see exactly what is there.

I think your LENO186AU might be a bit under specced. Yes, It has GPS - the main thing. But it has only the minimum required RAM and no 4G. 4G is not 100% necessary, but it sure makes using Traveller a pleasure. Without it you'll have to hotspot the tablet for all Traveller functions requiring internet. That may not necessarily be convenient.

Of course, a 4g tablet will require its own data plan from your telco and if that is a budgetary restraint, then wifi only is a reasonable compromise.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the actual performance of the Lenovo. Just be aware that shuffling the maps around in Traveller as you pan the map to and fro and zoom in and out is a pretty heavy task, even for high end devices, so you may not get the smooth operation that the more expensive options produce.

Could you go a bit further $$ wise and try a Samsung Tab S6 Lite. Still 4GB RAM but has 4G and more storage (64GB) anyway if you want to do other things with it.Here's a new one for $444. You could probably do better with second hand or refurbished if you look around. And if the 4g data plan is a deal breaker dollar-wise you don't have to use it, just hotspot as with the Lenovo. But I suspect the "user experience" will be better with the Samsung.

I have to admit that I'm pretty stuck on Samsung for Android products, I've had nothing but good results, particularly the Tab s6 (heavy) that I have for Traveller. Call that bias if you wish, I'm happy to admit it :-).

Hi Frank
The main thing I am looking for is to use mapping when I have no mobile coverage. So 4g is not really required. I can hotspot it to my phone if I need that anyway.
I Like Samsung too but it's a little overkill as I intend to use only for offline mapping and nothing else.
We already have Traveller running on an old Ipad & it works well when connected to wifi, but it has no gps.
It also gets used for other things, that's why I'm looking for a dedicated unit. I realise I will need to by Traveller again in the Android platform
Thanks, you've given me some ideas, Might look as increasing the budget a bit.
Cheers

Sorry Paul, the Samsung product that I linked to was wifi only, so disregard the 4g stuff I wrot in regard to that example.

And if you're happy with the hotspotting experience with Traveller on the iPad, then sticking with wifi only in the new device is fine - you're going in with open eyes, so all good.

Hi Frank
Thanks for the info. Pretty sure the old Ipad is less than 4gb ram & that runs ok but do have to wait a bit for maps to load (10 seconds). I don't mind too much though.
I just don't want this to get out of hand price wise.
I'll have a look through the list, Thanks.
My main concern was is the Lenovo had GPS & looks like it does. It also has 4 gb ram & with nothing else on it will probably perform better than the old ipad we have now. I know i'm trying to do this on the cheap, just hope I don't end up paying twice.... Ha!
Thanks again for the info.

I took that list out with an edit because it listed only Samsung with 4 and 5g which you don't want and Huawei which all had poor performance ratings, so I thought after posting that it wasn't relevant. Apologies.

Hey Chris

If Burke and Wills, Edward John Eyre, Paul Strzelecki, John McDouall Stuart, Alfred Canning, Len Beadell etc etc etc had pin point accuracy navigation apps on "tablets" - they wouldn't have been "explorers" they would have just been "travelers" lol

Not having a go mate, just saying !

Happy and safe travels ( and don't get lost when the signal is out )

The main advantage of having a 4g capable tablet is for using other mapping apps like Waze or Google maps when you aren't remote. These apps need the 4g to download the actual maps as you go, the 4g doesn't help the gps positioning that much and it only comes into play if the gps satellite fix is poor due to heavy cloud, buildings or land formations that might block the gps signal. If you don't have the maps then you'll have a gps position dot on a blank screen. Any wifi only device needs the maps downloaded and saved on the device before you leave.
I think using a tablet for only one thing is a real waste. Having other apps available doesn't hurt the processor power or memory if they aren't running. The tablet can do your email, web browsing and gps fine as long as it's not doing it all at the same time. Close apps properly so they aren't running in the background eating memory.

Hi Michael
Already have those on my phone if needed. Main reason I want a tablet is to see more detail off road, on a phone this can be a little crowded. Especially on forest tracks like Wombat & the like. This is why I don't need a high end unit. I just want an off road gps unit to run Exploroz Traveller offline. I like that program & mapping.
I have an even older Samsung tablet running Ozi Explorer but it's real slow I I haven't used it for years.
We also travel with a laptop which is mainly for email, web browsing & photo/video editing. So I don't need to duplicate that.
Thanks for your comments

pmk03 if you goto this Officeworks link
https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-tab-m10-hd-2nd-gen-10-1-4gb-ram-64gb-emmc-tablet-len0186au#specifications
it shows the specs of the unit you mention, and I cannot see that it has a GPS receiver and so it would be unsuitable.
The map file in the Traveller App is about 5Gb. I would be very wary of any tablet under 4Gb of ram as it maybe annoyingly slow. Others have said they have less, but tablets vary and IMHO if I was buying a new unit I would want reasonable performance and be a bit future proof.

Hi Chris,
That's the link I posted above. It does have GPS it's just not mentioned in that spec from Officeworks.
Somewhere back through the repies FrankP posted a Lenovo spec sheet that shows GPS.
Also the ram is within the requirement set out by Exploroz. Sure more would be better but I've been working with an old samsung that I think Noah used to own so I think I'll be ok.
I agree with future proofing but I also want to do this as cheap as possible within the correct requirement for the program. A little slow loading will not bother me.
Thanks

Lenovo's models are a bit confusing, just like Samsungs. All named similar but slightly different, and the difference makes a difference!!

Not all M10s are the same. It appears you need the M10 10.3 (2nd Gen) Tablet. Other versions may not have the GPS.

I just looked at this M10 on the Lenovo website. It DOES NOT have GPS.

Shop carefully, Paul.

Hello again Paul
I have just been looking on the Lenovo site and the M10 is not available any more. Had a pop up happen on screen. Seems it is possibly only Officeworks held stock being sold. There is a, " Tab M10 FHD Plus (2nd Gen)" offered as an alternative, on the Lenovo site but it definitely says NO GPS in specs of it, so you may have to look at another brand if wanting up to date gear and future proofed a little. Not sure how they can call it a 2nd gen and PLUS as well with less ability in some areas.

Paul,

I just did a trial installation on a Samsung Tab A7 (2020) 3GB Ram, 64GB memory (Model SM-T505)

It was new at Christmas, is pretty much out of the box with a few apps installed (wife's facebook and birding apps plus accounts).

I installed Traveller and just the 2021 vector maps.

Scrolling/panning the map and pinch zooming was for me unworkable. Too much delay in repainting the screen. An unhappy user experience in marketing terms.

So, though at possibly an acceptable price around $500, not suitable, IMO.

FYI.

It would be helpful if there was a trial version of Exploroz with restricted access to the 2021 maps to see if it works on existing Android devices before spending over $100 & finding it doesn’t work effectively.

Hi Paul & Michelle,

I don’t know why you don’t direct these questions to the help desk section. After all, David & Michelle built the site and its associated maps etc. they would be able to tell you how much memory is required to successfully run the app. using both on line & off line maps etc.

Hi Macca,
I read the system requirements on the Traveller section of this site. It was not real specific on ram requirements.

"Android
Compatible Android devices are Android tablets & Android phones of any make/model with at least the Android OS version 5.0.1 (Lollipop) and above. However, older devices with low RAM running older versions of the Android OS that are no longer supported may encounter slower operation and problems multitasking. We cannot offer any guarantee or support for unsupported OS."

Was just asking for other users experiences.
As I am looking at a new device I'm guessing the Android version won't be an issue
Thanks
Paul

I would have thought , if you buy a machine which has 4GB or RAM or 8GB of RAM, then the whole maps data 2.77GB, can be almost accommodated by the 4GB device seeing some is needed for the actual program, and 8GB Ram can load the program AND the Whole lot of the maps in it's entirety and will smoothly allow any process you wish and have some in reserve. A smaller older GB device like mine, Android 7, must have to delete and refresh with new info with what it can handle, each time you ask for a map position change. Hence the delay people seem to not accept. Sort of follows doesn't it?

Don't mind a little delay.
I'll follow up at a later date with which device I decided on & how it goes running Exploroz Traveller with the 2021 mapset
Thanks,
Paul

Hi All,
Just a follow up....
As I was trying to work within a budget I ended up accepting a compromise between price & speed of the unit.

What I got was a Samsung A7 10.4" (ms-t500) & I'm pretty happy with it. 3gb Ram, 32gb SSD.

We took it yesterday on a run around Wombat State Park & it didn't miss a beat all day ( EO Traveller & offline 2021 maps)

Yes, it lags about a second when you pinch zoom or drag too quickly. the longest I had to wait for the screen to fill was about 2 seconds. I can live with that. If you don't rush it the unit can keep up with your screen input.
As fas as tracking while driving around it never lagged all day. Held current position without delay & was a pleasure to use.
I love the look & clarity of the 2021 maps too. Detail is amazing.
For the price c/w the EO Traveller app & offine 2021 maps it came in at just over $400.00
I have had other "Off Road GPS Units" that cost similar (or more) & perform a lot worse.

Summing up, for the overall price you get a bigger screen than the ready made off road GPS units with what I think is the best mapping for what I want to use it for. If you can live with a second of two of screen lag then this combination is pretty good IMO. If you're "gentle" with your input it does keep up, depending on the zoom level. It's quicker when you are zoomed in for some reason.

Thanks Everyone for you info
Cheers,
Paul & Michelle
