As you approach the township of
Tully, you are entering the wettest zone of the World
Heritage Area. Each year,
Tully and nearby
Babinda vie for the "Gumboot Award" for the wettest town in Australia. They record over 4 metres (13 feet) of rain every year, and over millions of years, these downpours have gouged out the
Tully River
Gorge. The result is a wet weather playground for sightseers and white water rafters. There is a
camping area, butterfly information walk and raft viewing platforms (the best times are betweeen 11am and 1pm).
Access
the gorge from
Tully township. A 40-minute scenic drive follows
the gorge to the Kareeya Hydroelectric Station. For more information contact DNR
Cardwell on (07) 4066-8779.
