The Abercrombie River, is part of the Murray–Darling basin. The river is 130km in length from its source near Mount Werong village to its confluence with the
Lachlan River at
Wyangala Dam near Cowra. The river flows through freehold land as well as the
Abercrombie River National Park, and provides habitat for platypus and water rats.
Today, the area is popular with good camping locations found at 4 sites within the
Abercrombie River National Park, namely Bummaroo Ford (2WD and caravan accessible), Silent Creek (4WD), The Beach (4WD) and The Sink (4WD). There are also good 4WD fire trails leading to sites such as Licking Hole, and an abandoned goldminer’s cottage. Relics of the 19th century gold rush can also be found along the riverbanks.
Further camping is found in the Abercrombie Karst Conservation Reserve, namely at the
Abercrombie Caves Campground, which is wheelchair accessible and have 60 sites suitable for caravans, trailers and 2WDs.
