Information

Mount Augustus is known as Burringurrah to the local Wajarri Aboriginal people. The National Park was gazetted on 22 September 1989 and is made up of former parts of Mount Augustus and Cobra Stations.

During 1999-2000, the State purchased nearby pastoral leases Cobra and Waldburg and part leases of Mount Philip and Dalgety Downs with the aim of managing the whole area – including the national park – for conservation. The total area is now 607,603 hectares.

There are visitor sites and walking trails within the National Park but no campsites. The nearest camping is available at the Mount Augustus Outback Tourist Resort, managed by Mount Augustus Station.

Visitors to Mount Augustus National Park can drive the 49km Loop Drive, a circuit around the base of the mountain that provides access to all feature sites and hikes. This loop drive is on well-formed gravel road and is suitable to all conventional vehicles. See pdf document for National Park brochure detailing these walks and speak to the very helpful staff at the resort/station who will help you plan your trip. Allow at least 2 - 3 full days to explore and enjoy the walks, noting this is a remote area and conditions can change rapidly. Recent deaths have occurred on the Summit Trail in 2020 so you are urged to take heed of all local warnings and advice and don't overestimate your fitness or capacity to do these hikes.

A 1.5km track suitable for 2WD vehicles off the Cobra-Mount Augustus Road leads to Emu Hill Lookout. This site is managed by the Shire of Upper Gascoyne and is outside the boundary of the National Park but provides a good location to take photographs of the inselberg, especially at sunset. It is only a short, easy drive back to the resort/station.
