Auburn River is about 410 km north-west of Brisbane, or 225 km west of Maryborough. It is 40 km or 40 minutes drive south-west of Mundubbera, which is on the Burnett Highway. The last 7 km to the park is along an unsealed road. Conventional vehicle access is possible. Four-wheel-drive is recommended in wet weather.

The 405 ha park protects an area of open eucalypt forest and dry rainforest. Silver-leaved ironbark and forest red gum dominate the grassy open forests. Bottle trees thrive in the dry rainforest on the northern bank of the river near the camping area. Tumbling over massive, water-sculpted, salmon-coloured granite boulders, the scenic Auburn River flows through the park's steep-sided gorge and past a western hardwood forest now uncommon in the area.

The Auburn River, with its rock pools and cascades, winds through the park, providing habitats for numerous birds, reptiles and mammals. Its banks are lined with bottlebrushes, flowering leptospermum shrubs and stunted figs.

Walks (over rough footpads) begin from the picnic and camping area. If you intend to bushwalk away from the trails below, obtain a topographic map from the DERM Bundaberg office and ask for advice before setting off. Ensure you carry adequate drinking water.
1. Gorge Lookout—600 m return Class 3 track
2. Riverbed and rockpools—1.5 km return Class 5 track
3. Gorge-top walk—3.2 km return Class 3 track

The picnic area is located in a picturesque bush setting on the northern bank of the Auburn River. Picnic tables, toilets and a gas barbecue are provided. Take drinking water, a fuel stove for cooking or your own firewood. River water is unsuitable for drinking.

Auburn River Campground: Located on the northern bank of the river in open eucalypt forest a short walk from the river and bushwalking opportunities. Limited number of sites available.
Facilities include: Toilets, a gas barbecue, shelter shed, picnic tables and communal fire rings (bring your own fuel). River water is unsuitable for drinking. Generators are permitted.
