Alexandra Battery was built in the 1880's as part of the defences for Derwent River Defence Force Network. The motivating force for its construction was a perceived threat of attack by Russia.
A large area of
open space with a large old fort complex, including tunnels and store rooms, this site has superb
views of the River Derwent, north the Tasman
Bridge and City, south to the South Arm and the estuary opening.
It is best accessed from Churchill Avenue that turns westward and up
hill from the highway immediately south of the site.
