The
Gibb River is 30 m wide and very sandy at this point and travellers will find the a concrete causeway. This is often covered with 10 cm water early in June, but the flow will cease by mid month. By September only a few stagnant pools remain. The causeway allows all traffic (including cattle trucks and supply trucks) to access Drysdale and other stations north towards
Kalumburu. As of 2013 camping is no longer permitted here and it is now a
day use area only. Tourist group buses use this spot as a lunchstop and it's nice for a swim.
Having just travelled the
Kalumburu Rd to
Mitchell Falls turnoff and then road into
Mitchell Falls
Campsite, I have to say although the end result is nothing short of spectacular, I will never, ever in my lifetime subject myself or my vehicles to that disgusting road ever again. Take a plane, helicopter or anything, but if you have any respect for your assets, do not drive. The only happy faces are the drivers of Government or hire vehicles, or perhaps the younger drivers, yes, I do remember when you don't have too many cares in the world. Disgusting, disgrace to whoever is responsible for the maintenance of this road. Everyone should be entitled to view the spectacular scenery this area has to offer, mostly the retired who are only at this stage in their
well deserved lives get the opportunity to venture to these parts of our country. The rewards are mostly apart from the scenery, broken vehicles or trailers in some form or another. OK, we want to preserve our beauties but unless we are politicians or the rich and famous we will never get the opportunity to see these amazing parts of our country. Please improve our roads, provide a
Grader on a regular basis.
