P.S. Jane Eliza Boiler

This is the original boiler from the P.S. Beechworth, which was built at Echuca in 1865. Two years later at its moorings site, it was burnt to the water line.

The Paddle Steamer was rebuilt and renamed Jane Eliza, with the original bottom and engine and continued life as a passenger and cargo carrying vessel.

In 1878 the boiler was removed during a refit in Goolwa and became part of the Goolwa foundry. Later the P.S. Jane Eliza and the Goolwa foundry were purchased by the Chaffey Brothers who developed the first irrigation settlements in Australia at Renmark and Mildura.

The foundry was relocated to Renmark and the Jane Eliza was used as a temporary pumping unit for irrigation at both Renmark and Mildura. In 1963 the grounds were purchased by the Showell family where the boiler was uncovered and it is believed that this boiler was used as part of the Chaffer Brothers No 1 Pumping station in 1900.
