We were warned that Bears would be our number one concern whilst exploring the backwoods and wild river country of the Yukon and Alaska so it almost developed into paranoia with us. Our solution, put one “Bear-bait” Kennedy outside in a tent (Al, the entity previously known on this site as “Outback Al”). Ensure that there is always a food item somewhere in his tent and rub down his sleeping bag with the magic lamb chop each day. It keeps the bears away from our campers and makes for great entertainment as well. He may be in his early 60’s but by god he’s quicker off the mark than Usain Bolt when he has to be.

We were fortunate enough to have quite a few encounters with these amazing animals during our trip through the Yukon, North West Territories, the Arctic and Alaska. They were mostly fleeting but every now and then we were fortunate enough to have one that would hang around for a photo. I thought I would share a few of our better photos with you.

Our sightings were primarily of the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), also known as the silvertip bear and North American brown bear and the more common (North) American black bear (Ursus americanus). The Black bear is a lot smaller than his brown cousin, more skittish and a damn site less ornery! While both will attack and kill a human in certain circumastances, the Grizzly is not the one you want to go one on one with. As you can imagine, there were quite a few humorous bear stories to be had on our trip especially the one involving Jaydub, the hedgehog and a dunny roll!!!! But more on that later ........
