I use an old ipad with no gps for mapping.
Simple device, a GPS receiver that uses bluetooth.

Mine is like this . . .

GNS 3000

You'll need offline maps downloaded to the ipad unless you still hotspot the phone. The GPS signal and the maps are separate, the location data comes from a satellite and the maps come from the internet via 3 or 4g.

No probs Doug.
FWIW, I use both Hema 4WD Maps (downloaded app and maps) and Mapout on my ipad, dash mounted.
Usually run Mapout on the iphone to record travels (gpx files) and use in collaboration with other nav.

It's a love / hate thing with Hema 4WD Maps.
Mostly they are brilliant almost anywhere, but folk touring the high country find it lacks detail.
You can download extra maps like 1:25k topos, but even these can be older versions.

Mapout is great, shows great detail zoomed in, 4WD tracks like Madigan and the camps, even down to named walking tracks . . . terrain, contour lines, places of interest.
Zoom out and the detail is lost as you zoom back, so it's a balance.
With Mapout you can download any maps you want, I've used it all over Oz, PNG, NZ, Nepal, Bhutan trips, it's very handy.
Maps you have used can be deleted from the device anytime too to make storage space, though they aren't big files, I have all Oz downloaded.

Mapout used to be free, think it's $5 now.
Hema 4WD Mpas wass $99 when I bought the app.

Of course you're on a site now with their own great mapping system.
