Here is one that informs.
The project was to create an artwork in the rain forest that had the unique concept of having a Strangler Fig planted in the top with the expectation that it would grow and envelop the cairn. Maybe in a couple of hundred years.
The weak point of that idea was that Strangler Figs take root in the bark of forest trees and gain their nutrient there until eventually (and that's a loooong eventually) the roots reach the soil and away it goes. Perhaps the artist did not notice that there is not much bark on a
rock cairn, Doh!
Accordingly, the cairn is now on its fourth strangler seedling and a mat has been installed around it with the intent of retaining moisture.
Well good luck with that. They do say that artists need to suffer before achieving greatness.
However, it is a nice walk of about 6km from the
carpark so I'll keep visiting and hope that the seedling is thriving. It is a maybe half-hour drive from
my home.
