Permanent address when on the road?

Hi all.
Seriously contemplating life on the road full time in retirement.
Those of you who are doing something similar, who or what do you list
as your permanent place of residence for mail, registration, insurance etc.?

I vaguely remember something set up in place for just such a convenience
but can't remember the details of it.

Hoping someone can help or point me in the right direction.

We use a mailbox. Works well, and all mail is kept in the PO until we collect it.

What do you list your address as if required for insurance purposes?

Do they accept a post office box?

Not sure Wayne. We also have a street address, and would doubt that insurance would just accept a mailbox.
They tend to have "areas" and want to know where the vehicle is garaged, but there must be plenty of cases like yours. You'll just have to ask I guess.

Our insurance wants the street address for the property, but allows a POBox for mailing address.

We have a PO Box, but we also have everything emailed to us. Bills, renewals, reminders etc. We also set up automatic payments where possible!

Whilst travelling around Aus, we had a neighbour collect our mail and send it on to us at an address we nominated.

We do much the same as Notso. Have all bills on auto payment where possible, and have everything emailed as well. Does mean you need internet connection almost everywhere, but does work well.
Even contemplated taking a portable printer once, but decided not to and didn't need it.

You can buy a block of land in some backwaters for less than $10k. Put a tin shed on it and visit it every couple of years. Home sweet not your home. Everything can be done by email these days.

Hi Michael,

I like your idea, but it is not just as simple as that. Blocks of land, even in rural settings have to be maintained. Yes you can pay someone to do that for you, but it needs to be done several times per year. Just putting a “tin shed” on it might not meet local bylaws conditions, may need to have “continual” improvements. Also still does not solve the problem of where to have mail forwarded to. For most insurance companies, a “garaged” address is required for both car and caravan. Falsifying this information will see your insurance null and void. As I said, I like your idea, just not that simple.

There's rates to pay as well. I can't see how this method is any less dodgy than using different "friends" addresses. At least you actually own the land. :-)

Using a friend's address as a "garaging" address is not "dodgy", providing that the friend agrees.

Make sure the garaging address is in a state with low cost rego and insurance, never in NSW.

Hi Wayne,

This is not an easy one as the Australian bureaucracy, both government and commercial, has not caught up with the fact that there are many people with no 'fixed place of abode' although the Electoral Commission does provide voting arrangements for "Long Term Travellers Within Australia".

It is a common question on 'Grey Nomad" forums but with no absolute resolution. I guess most people use the address and forwarding assistance of cooperative relatives or friends but not everyone enjoys that convenience.

There are services such as Aussie Mail Man who can provide mail forwarding services for a fee of about $20/month. They can also provide their physical address which could be quoted for purposes such as rego and insurance, although strictly speaking, that may not be entirely legal as it is not your 'place of residence' or 'address where vehicle is normally parked'.

You could also engage the services of a legal practitioner to act as your agent but that may be prohibitively expensive.

You may receive helpful advice from asking your insurance company and the motor vehicle registration in your State.

We have a friend who has no fixed abode.
He uses our address for his mail and as the garaging address for his motorhome.
The motorhome is registered in SA. He has a NSW drivers license that uses another friend's address.
