It all depends on what way you want to drive?

If you want nearly all bitumen, then straight up the Stuart Highway as far as Kulgera, then cross over the railway line and then a good dirt road all the way to Finke.

If you do not mind dirt roads, follow the Murray as far as Morgan, turn right through to Burra and then Spalding and then up to Hawker.

There are some magic places to see and visit in the Flinders and then a must stop and stay at Farina and the last of the bitumen to Marree.

The Oodnadatta Track is a great drive and full of history.. from Oodnadatta on the New Crown Homestead and then a good run into Finke.

As I said, only you know the type of tracks you like to follow, but it is never any question for me, hit the dirt where you can for a better drive.

Some short video clips between Oodnadatta and New Crown Homestead.
This area has a wonderful "remote" feel, but is quite easy driving if you take it quietly.
Eringa water hole is a great camp area.

River Rina : I don't have any subjections for our route , but was wondering what type / condition road are you prepared to travel on as i don't think you have mentioned . I was a little concerned on some of the roads suggested in the reply's not knowing your expectations
are you going into Alice for the pre race entertainment ?? and then heading down the old south road to watch the race over two days ? I can tell you this road is VERY busy rough & dusty come race time .

Thank you Nick, have you been to the races? I am not going to the entertainment , going in early to find a good spot to setup my motorhome hopefully before it gets busy. do you think the roads are not suitable for a 2wd truck of this size? slow 'n steady for me on corrugations, how do you know a good spot if you havn't been before?
I don't mind dirt roads as I did the whole Birdsville track in my Falcon wagon in 1995 when it was a goat track!

You have seen roads like these, so you won't have any problem on any of the roads mentioned if you go early and take it quietly.
As mentioned, the road that follows the race route can be pretty ordinary, especially the northern section because of constant traffic to Chambers Pillar from Alice.
Traffic will be the biggest concern and there will be lots before the race and again after, so you might choose to come home via the black top, but getting up there early via Ood is a good plan.

Even the Ood can get busy and cut up. https://youtu.be/3-Q2JOvkoiw
Couple of random shots north of Finke.

We did not get any tyre damage :)
Cheers,

River rina : going to find a good place to camp early would be a good plane from the Alice end of the track , i usually head down around deepwell ..
Nothing wrong using the Oodnadatta rd but would not recommend coming in from finke end in your vehicle on to the access road ..its the old train line , Used by the service vehicles for the race .
