Here is a very unique old cottage ruin. The feature that makes this unique, is the arch window.

This ruins was once a families special home.

Do you know the name of this ruin?

Hi Macca,

You are on the money.

It is northwest of Orroroo and southeast of Hawker.

The ruin in known locally as the....................Family Ruins.

If people have visited this place, they will be well aware of it.

The next hint, you do not need a four wheel drive to access the ruins and a standard passenger vehicle can get there.

Could it be one of the old buildings at the Prince Alfred Mine site, as these buildings have similar type of windows

I reckon you are right Garry although by my calculation it is East of Quorn, NW of Orroroo and more South of Hawker.

Barry and Peter, just finished reading Stephens Facebook page. Very interesting reading. According to Stephen the Connell family still own and run the station But the ruins were Known as the" Kranz Cottage Ruins". My original research was old ruins in Sth Aust Library site that came up with my answer, but it did not mention the Kranz Cottage Ruins, only as i stated it was locally known as "the Shoe'. May be Stephen as enlighten us to where the Kranz came from.

Well done Garry, now we have the Correct Answer, well done.

Teresa said they were the original settlers in that area, but only knew it was the mid 1800’s.

The Connell’s like countless farming people have been his very hard by the prolonged drought, making a small income from what sheep they have left and tourism, opening up Horseshoe Top End as a fantastic place to stay and explore.

At the beginning of the year, the long term weather forecast was a wetter than average winter.....well that never eventuated. In that gamble they planted their first cereal crop in 7 years, and then within a week of seeding, the Chinese Government imposed the tariffs on Barley which was a real kick in the guts.

The winter rains never came and still by very late July the seeded paddocks were just rows on small stone with very little crop germinated. During the last month they have received some good rainfall, the first for many years. Fingers crossed they can still reap some of the barley and help recover the hundreds of thousands of dollars they spent on the seeding.

I have no idea of the history there but I did stumble upon some information on a Reg Butler (Hahndorf historian) site in my research and reckon these two Prussians may well have had something to do with the cottage.
Father & son with the elder being a builder and the son a farmer at one time at Moockra.
The dates and locations tie in and seems we can partly thank them also for some good Barossa wines.

Kranz

Well done Peter W, thanks for the further research on the subject. It is always interesting to find out what, where and when in our history. Researching of places makes me look into areas I have never thought of, and that we have some good spots to visit closer to home that one would not of considered. Once again well done for the further research

Thanks for taking the time to fill up all in, greatly appreciated.

Found this link in TROVE also Stephen and if my brain is working correctly it places FWK Jnr in Moockra as a land purchaser around 1876-96 but of course he could have been traveling and working there beforehand and checked the land prior to purchasing.
Note also a change of name spelling in the paper article which is dated 13 Feb 1936.
Of course with family recollections (paper article) you can never be sure of exact dates but he was for a long time in the general area albeit South.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/92334357

Regardless of the exact dates these guys did it very tough in those years and it seems not much has changed around the Goyder line.
