The reason I suggest you call the pubs is because the govt depts sometimes have less than accurate info. Last time I went up, the govt website said it was closed but I saw many vehicles go thru. I called the B/villes pub and the girl said that she did it the previous day and gave all of the issues incl bypass due to the floods

Generally it's a 3 lane dirt highway.

Expect corrugations but they're less common than they used to be.

14mm of rain or more around Birdsville will see the roads in closed.http://www.thediamantina.com.au/road-conditions

We did it in 1995 with road tyres, no ground clearance & rear wheel drive when it was a goat track! easy peasy!

Hey norm - why is there a watermarked email address on this photo? notablepics @ tpg etc etc
I love the pic - and would like to ask if you'd let us share it on the ExplorOz instagram page? I'd be betting most of the young kids on insta wouldn't believe it and that's one heck of a classic car!
We also travelled the BVI track in the '90s - but 3 or 4 years after this pic was taken and by then it was all 4WDs - although many people seemed to have a hard time with cornering on the gibber... quite a lot of speed related accidents sadly. We lived in Birdsville for 6 months in 1999 and it was eye-opening - day after day police would get called out to rollovers down the track yet find they were driving brand new 4WDs and brand new offroad campers that were well and truly capable of the job - IF driven to conditions.

.
Michelle, if I can find it I will send you a photo of my father and his brother, together with their wives who, in 1949, drove a brand new Vauxhall Velox from Adelaide to Perth and back along the old unsealed Eyre Highway.
Cheers
Allan
