Nuther one for the intrepid travellers. If one wanted to travel from Lochern NP to Opalton, which roads? Is straight through onto the Winton Jundah Rd and then loop back around to Opalton the best way? Or is there a "short cut"? Prado towing a small off-road van.
cheers

Hi , it may amuse you to read our account of trying to take a shortcut. Basically ignore any shortcuts the maps might suggest. We tried. Really the only route is as on the map below. There was once a road which went through from the camp spot on the Mayne River, but that is no longer possible, So yes you do have to go a fair way up the Winton Jundah Rd & then double back southward on the Mayneside Rd & then northward again when you get to the gate at Mayneside. The Bladensburg NP is worth a visit after Opalton.

Suitcase,

Cuppa’s detailed route is the one I’d have suggested too. There may be some bulldust patches along that route, depending on how many double deckers have been through that area, but nothing to worry a Prado. There’s been no rain of any consequence either lately, so you could perhaps easily detour around any bigger bulldust patches?

If you’re coming to Winton, the Waltzing Matilda Centre is open, as is Australian Age of Dinosaurs(bookings required) and Lark Quarry dinosaur tracks.

That channel country is riddled with tracks (plus the occasional cranky grazier!), may of which change according to the way the seasonal channels open and close due to flood flows.
Some years ago we mined opal on Mayneside, there is a track we sometimes used runs directly west from above Longreach and through Vergemont.
I think there may be a track follows Vergemont creek from Lochern NP to Vergemont which would then go on to Maynesyde/ Opalton, but it may be also unpassable.

Along with Cuppa's observations, another word of advise regarding any tracks with a sign saying "keep out". Best heed the advise, will more than likely lead to an opal miners camp who does not appreciate visitors.

A very useful map book is the Atlas of Qld. and NT Pastoral Stations by Terrence and Rosemary Alick. Great country out there, you will enjoy it all

Just for interests sake I think the the track we unsuccessfully tried to follow & were escorted off was the one marked on the map below in orange.
