Hi all,

We are in the early planning stages of our trip to the Kimberley/GRR next year and were looking to spend a night in Halls Creek. A quick squiz at trip adviser and the caravan park is getting mixed reviews and its a bit hard to know what the actual go is from behind my computer screen :)
So we are hoping to get some info from anyone who was there this season just gone, and if it is as sketchy as it's made out to be, are there any alternatives?.

PS, We dont expect the Ritz and certainly aren't precious, looking forward to the dust and dirt, it's all part of the adventure :)

Cheers
Lou

We’ve stayed many times at the park over the years including this year. You just need to take precautions to avoid becoming a target. Keep your gear locked up including vehicle windows, especially at night. It’s not a bad park, but it’s easy for people to easily walk in and out through the front gate. The amenities are ok too - very welcoming to get rid of some of that red dust :)

Simply don't stay at halls creek, you only have to look at the tourist information centre, totally covered in mesh & bars to give you the jist, on a trip this year it was the only place we had problems whilst filling up caught 1 kid inside the truck trying to steal anything he could, whilst he's mate was trying to steal any thing off the back, I only use Halls Creek to fill up & get a few supplies.

If you were to take notice of that and apply it elsewhere then no one would stay in Alice Springs or Tennant Ck and probably many other places. Plenty do though and with normal precautions they have no problem.

Vince, if you left the vehicle unlocked while refuelling, no wonder you had uninvited guests.

Car locked & broken into whilst paying for fuel & tie downs cut, but like normal on this site if you don,t give a glowing report you get ridiculed

Vince, if you had supplied further information, as you now have, I would not have posted and it was not ridicule, it was an observation on information given.

Hi Vince,

Sorry for your troubles, but I have to agree with John, if you had supplied more info on your original comment, then his comment would not have happened. I too thought the same as John when I read you comment.

Hi Lou

Far too many people judge Halls Creek like a book with a torn cover., and the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover.

It is no different to any remote place, get out and say hi to the locals including the Aboriginals, they do not bite.

We have stayed there and would not hesitate to stay again.

Cheers

Well said Stephen.

Stayed at caravan park in August and took exactly the same precautions as I would anywhere. Lock the car and don’t leave valuable gear lying around unattended.

Facilities were good.

The park filled up late afternoon so there were a lot of other people not worried either.

Cheers

Same here - stayed in August and found it to be fine, amenities good, the shop is amazing, lockup as you should do, dry under foot (where isn't) and a very short stroll to the pub for dinner and great value breakfasts.
Cheers John

My first visit to Halls Creek was 38 years ago & as a fresh 21yr old on my first trip around Australia I must say I found it a little intimidating. But It was all new to me then & growing up in Melbourne I saw a lot on that trip that I had never seen before. It was a little like the wild west to me back then.

Having been there a few times again since I don't know what I was worried about
I think first time travelers to these places suffer from a bit of a culture shock because it's not what they are used to.

There are a few towns around the country that suffer the same impressions from some travelers. Funny but to me there the ones I find the most interesting.
Go & have a look & make your own decisions...... Because someone else may have a different perception.
That's been my experience.... Nothing has been as bad as what others have told me, be it road conditions or towns..

Cheers

Paul

Thanks for that Paul,

I do like to check for myself as well, as you say different views and perceptions.

One thing is for certain though I cant wait to hit the road next June :)

I have stayed at the Motel in Halls Creek for two nights and I was a bit concerned but most places that need security do have high fences and gates and they did not have them.

Ceduna and Warburton spring to mind, they have very impressive fences

I have lived & was brought up in some of Australia’s most remote places/property/stations, went to schools where I was the only white kid & have many indigenous friends & are far from being intimidated by them, I can speak 3 indigenous dialects fluently (better than a lot of the locals who reside in these towns/community’s now) & happen to have a school friend (from 45+ years ago) live in Halls Creek who I visited who advised that the town is getting better but has problems. I also gave an indigenous couple a lift from Halls Creek to Turkey Creek (approx. 160klms) that I did not know but came over & gave me a hand to reposition the load & re-strap & asked could they get a lift. Would have some of you!
In Australia every state whether it be a capital city a country town or remote community, have problem areas White, Black etc. so if we just gave our noulage of our experience of the area good or bad the inquirer could make up their own decisions without the extra crap

I needed some repairs on my caravan so stopped at Halls Creek. The service and repair work was exceptional. The repair man dropped everything to work on my van straight away and spent a couple of hours laying underneath cutting, welding and fitting reinforcing to the chassis. When completed I asked how much I owed him thinking a few hundred would be fair, he said “ oh just give me 50 dollars” I am still amazed at his kindness which is why I post this reply.
Thank you Halls Creek and by the way my wife had a hard time convincing him to accept more than the 50 he asked for.

Great mate, nice to know there are still some good people out there. We were there in 2004, & had no problems staying at the caravan park.

I can think of quite a few Sydney suburbs that I would NOT enter and even some of the supposedly “better areas” that have some bad eggs. At the end of the day we have to look after ourselves regardless of where we are at.

Well I watched this thread and all I can say is I have parked and slept over night in Halls creek and I never had any bad moments. I won't say the same for the hospitality at the shell servo.

I bought my fuel around the corner at Halls Creek Toyota.

Credit card operated pump and no waiting. probably a few cents a litre dearer (which in the context of a 10,000km trip means little) but the traffic jam at the Shell servo was daunting.

Cheers.

The caravan park is a good place to stay. Clean facilities and good water, plus a short walk to the pub.
