I intend to drive from Nullargine to Carawine Gorge in the next week or two and have noticed that the East Pilbara road condition report states that the major part of the road is closed for all but 4wd vehicles.
Has anyone done this drive recently and if so what were the conditions really like.
I am obviously aware that this is very subjective but would like to get a feel for the road as there will only be the one vehicle (BT50)
Thanks in anticipation

Hi Chris w2. We've driven the Skull Springs Rd which is what I think you mean, on numerous occasions including when the same warning has been issued. Last time was around 3 months ago with a small caravan and it was no problem. 2 weeks ago we nearly drove it again from Carawine to Nullagine but instead went via Marble Bar way as we'd never used that road.
In total I think we've been along it about 10 times, sometimes with just the Landrover but on others with a camper trailer or our van. Good road apart from the odd stretch where it's a bit rough but nothing to cause trouble.
Enjoy the trip.
AlanTH

PS. Forgot to say that apart from one time we've travelled it alone with no problems.

Going the direction you are Chris you can go into Eel Pool/Running Waters and there's camping along there at an old mining exploration site if you decide to stop.
Or just after that turn which is on the right with an old skull and a spring to let you know.... you can branch left and go through to Upper Carawine on a good track with some great views. Good camping there as well.
After that just travel onto the Ripon Hills Rd then to the gorge itself is an easy run.
Have a good trip.
AlanTH.

PS. Carawine was a bit of a dust bowl and the water was low two weeks ago but very few campers there. Plenty of screeching bloody cockies though. Thousands of them. :)

Hi Chris
We drove Nullagine, Running Waters, Carawine Marble Bar just 6 weeks ago and it was in excellent condition for a gravel road. We were in a 200 series towing a camper trailer. No worries at all.
The road services many mining tenements along the way snd gets regular use and appeared to have been graded recently.
Keep a sharp eye out for the Running Waters turn off. There are two tracks in. Make sure you take the western one . The other has a nasty creek crossing if you are towing a camper trailer.
It’s a pretty place to camp.
Cheers Craig

I drove from Nullagine to Running Waters on the 20th June in my 17 year old Prado and averaged 60kph, so that may give you some idea on what its like.

Its a very picturesque drive and a BT50 should have no problems coping.
