Hi All
Heading away later in the year to Arnhem Land. Wish to keep this REAL simple.
Can I buy an external GPS, plug it into my laptop and then see where I am on my Hema Digital Maps.
Just want it for turns when very remote and the route is in question. Happy to have to do something manually if that is needed. If it shows a moving map, great, but not to fussed. Will also be carrying detailed paper maps.
I know, there are heaps of fantastic options but I just don't have the time. I even have an Ozi Explorer license, lol.
Hema's GPS's have what can only be described as HORRENDOUS reviews, so will avoid that. If they can't handle the sun down south without shutting down I'd love to see how they run in the Top End!

Lyndon, don't fret if you don't find a solution. To Arnhem Land, either east or west, you won't get lost.

well signed.

Your permit will only let you go where it says. Northern land council will give you a map. You really dont need a gps as the communities are sign posted and access restricted. If you do happen to get lost...you will be in an area where your not allowed anyway!.

Yes, you can certainly do moving map with the HEMA/OziExplorer on your lap top.
I used to do it with an old "plug-in" Garmin GPS Map76 that had no maps, so a GPS dongle would be fine.

There are apps for a mobile phone that will share the mobiles gps location over bluetooth.
Like this one.

Being aware, though, that some phones require phone connection for the GPS to activate with any degree of accuracy.

I use a GNS 2000 Bluetooth Receiver with my WiFi only iPad (and
Exploroz Traveller).
I note from
here that this device is compatible with a "Windows-based laptop". The GNS 2000 is available on eBay, or several other sources.
Mine works really
well, is fast and accurate.

Before they started putting GPS's into most gadgets a device called a BU-353 GPS Receiver was available for that job.
It plugged into a USB port, it looks like a small round computer mouse and had a magnetic back.
I think I bought
mine at this
forum shop.
It worked a treat on a trip to the Kimberleys, with the GPS stuck to the A pillar inside my troopie. I used OZ explorer software but I should think it also works with HEMA as long as you have the relevant maps on your lap top.
I still have it but now use a 7" tablet with inbuilt GPS on the dashboard, the laptop required a fancy bracket to hold in place securely on rugged roads.

I've had a bluetooth mouse style gps receiver for years that was faultless on my Windows 7 laptop. That laptop karked it and the new windows 10 laptop keeps dropping the connection to the bluetooth receiver which is quite annoying. A cheap Android tablet is less hassle. One of the best features of Memory Map is the app is free on ipads, android and windows, and you can move your maps between them so buying a new device means your maps are always compatible.
Ps You do have to buy the maps from Memory Map though. I have the Hema map set.

I have been given an old ipdad with GPS. I also own the Hema Maps. Does this mean I don't need to spend anymore coin?

The USB GPS Receivers work
well with OziExplorer..

You'll have two challenges though:
1. Driver installation - this may not work out of the box, and your machine may need a driver installed. This is not always straightforward
2. Once installed you have to work out which COM port number its appeared at and what speed the port is running at. Ozi has an inbuilt tool to help with this.. but again its not always straight forward.
If you're comfortable with the technicalities of the above you'll be fine, if its double dutch then you'll struggle.

A better alternative to a USB Mouse and OziExplorer running on a laptop though is a $150 Android Tablet from Orifice Works and the excellent
ExplorOz Traveller app.. great setup for around $200.

Just for your information I use a Samsung galaxy s3 with Ozi explorer and it works extremely
well, and as I am heading for the
Canning stock Route on the 27April apart from the paper maps it is the only navigation the we will need After much touring around the country side,learning how to use it.

Does the $150.00 tablet you refer to have a chip in it to pick up the satellites, or are you connecting a GPS to it?

Hi Roger,
the galaxy S3 has its own gps system in it and works extremely
well when off road and not connected to wifi or has no coverage from Telstra.
I some times wish that I had brought the next size up as I find the screen at times a bit small
